Pinal-Gila
Council for Senior Citizens this week has
launched the Senior Rider Assistance Program to
help with the special transportation needs of
those living in Casa Grande who are 60 years of
age or over who have no other means of
transportation.
This program
offers two transportation options. Seniors may
purchase cab coupons for a nominal cost of $2.50
per book of $10.00 coupons. They also can choose
to be reimbursed fifty cents per mile, up to 400
miles per month. Reimbursements will then, in
turn, be used to reimburse friends, neighbors
and relatives for the cost of gasoline when they
volunteer to provide rides for seniors.
Applications for
the program are available by calling Pinal-Gila
Council for Senior Citizens, the Area Agency on
Aging for Region V, at 520-836-2758.
Applications are available to be picked up at
the Dorothy Powell Senior Adult Center, 405 E.
6th Street, Casa Grande.
This new Senior
Rider Assistance Program (RAP) will begin taking
applications on October 11. The program was
developed in response to area needs assessments
that prioritized the lack of transportation for
seniors as a major problem. It is modeled after
successful programs already in place in the
cities of Mesa and Apache Junction. The City of
Casa Grande and Central Arizona Association of
Government allocated state LTAF II
transportation funding for this pilot program to
Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens to
address this issue.
Seniors who are
unable to drive or have to depend on friends or
relatives for trips to the doctor, grocery
store, senior center, church or to visit friends
now will have new options.
Because of rising
gasoline costs this new Senior Rider Assistance
Program should make it a lot easier for seniors
to find the rides they need.
