30th Year Anniversary, Another Success

The 30th Annual Pinal Gila Senior Fair and Bazaar was a huge success. The Fair, held March 12 at the Central Arizona College campus, included 100 vendors and exhibitors and over 2,000 attendees.

Olivia Guerrero, the President and CEO of Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens, emceed this year's program. Melanie Starns, newly appointed as the Governor's Aging Policy Advisor and Executive Director of the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging was the guest speaker. Garciala Figueroa, V P Institutional Advancement, Central Arizona College; City Councilman Dick Powell for the City of Casa Grande; and Tom Smith, Vice Chairman, Board of Directors, Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens each spoke as representatives of the Fair’s sponsors.

A much anticipated part of the program each year is the Outstanding Senior Awards. "Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year" presentations were made to Simone Kelsh of Florence for Pinal County and Belen Cluff of Winkleman for Gila County. "Community Service Awards" went to Henry Colvin of Globe for Gila County and Maybelle Thoen of Kearny for Pinal County. Wanda Henry of Apache Junction and Marlene White Miller of Gold Canyon each received certificates in recognition of their community volunteer work.

The Blackwater Seniors were recognized for having participated in all 30 Senior Fairs. Also recognized were vendors George McMurrick, 20 years and Diane Pecor and Bobbi McCarthy both for 15 years participation. The sponsors and co-chairs for this event were Shelly Hanley, Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens; Shayla Butler, the City of Casa Grande; and Barbara Gibson, Central Arizona College.


The sponsors want to thank Pastor David Landry and Boy Scout Troop 919 for participating in the program. A special thank you to CAC’s Jazz Choir for providing musical entertainment, always a highlight of the fair and to the Casa Grande Union High School Marine Corps JROTC cadets for volunteering their services.
